Light the Night is Blood Cancer United’s annual walk to help raise awareness, support life-saving research and bring hope and comfort to those living with blood cancer. Harbor House of Rochester is collaborating with Blood Cancer United Buffalo to Light the Night in the Flower City in a special celebration of healing event Saturday September 19, 4:30 – 6:30 PM at the Village Square of Brickstone by St. John’s. The event kicks off with a unique courtyard walk on Saturday September 19 (September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month) starting at 4:30 pm; and we are seeking people to walk the walk with us!
‘Light the Night’ will feature live music by Rochester’s acclaimed jazz duo Laura Dubin and Antonio Guerrero as well as a special program highlighting patient stories of courage and resilience. A reception dinner buffet will follow the event; R.S.V.P. strongly encouraged.
Harbor House provides supportive temporary lodging to families of adult patients, caregivers and patients receiving critical care such as treatment for various cancers, heart and vital organ diseases and trauma related injuries at Rochester area hospitals. This year, we are shining a light on the unique relationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and blood cancers, and the need for better understanding of this relationship as well as new treatment and prevention measures.
CVD and cancer share several risk factors, including hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, smoking, diet, physical activity, and social determinants of health. These shared risk factors can increase the risk of both conditions, leading to a bidirectional relationship where CVD can increase the risk of cancer and vice versa.
